Even Bronchitis Can Bring Back Childhood Memories

Published by yellowbird at 2:45 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I have chronic bronchitis today.  I’ve had it ever since I was in junior high.   Longer than I care to remember.    Even tho my mother isnt with me any longer I can hear her words in my mind :” now you call the doctor and get some medication” .  The next time I would call her the first thing out of her mouth was to ask me if I called the doctor.   I would tell her no, not yet.  She would ask me if I was waiting to get sicker.   I knew my brnchitis wasnt getting worse.

One time in my teens when I had bronchitis, the doctor told my mother and dad to get the vaporizer going.   I would lay on the couch and have this stupid vaporizer on the tv tray beside me.  I didnt have time for it.  One day I was laying there and for some unknown reason I decided that I would move the vaporizer.  It tipped over and this hot steam went on my leg.  Hurt like holy hell.  My mother had gone uptown for something and I was by myself.   I decided not tell my mom or dad that I tipped the vaporizer over.   So, I worked to get it upright and make it look like nothing happened.  That night while undressing me my mom saw this huge blister on my leg and asked where it came from .    I told her about the vaporizer.   She asked why I was moving it.   I told her I really didnt know why I did.   The next morning she called the doctor and got some medication to put on the blister.  It took awhile for the blister to go away.  I had a scar for a long time after that.   I forgot about it till recently and there is no scar.   Finally it dissappeared.   When I get bronchitis now I remember what she told me when she was alive.  Last year I had it again and used a vaporizer.  I used it for quite awhile.  One day I looked up at the ceiling and there was mold .   Mold isnt healthy, so I had to have someone remove the mold.   I hesistate to disobey her about not using the vaporizer but I dont use it any more because of the mold.  My  mom would be quite proud of mehowever because I came down with bronchitis on friday and called the doctor monday.

Even tho my family is no longer with me I  we can still hear in my heads what they tell me in certain situations.   With me being disabled I can hear alot of things that mom would tell me.   I also remember when I was quite small and had a cold.  I was about 2 or 3 and mom would insist that I blow my nose.  With cerebral palsy it takes a long time for the brain to grasp what to do .   I remember her holding the kleenex up to my nose and telling me to blow.   I couldnt blow right away, so it continued untill I could blow my nose.  It was a real accomplishment for me.   My mother had to be insistent, and she was, and I finally did blow my nose.   She would pinch my nose gently and ask me to blow, and finally I got it.  She was very happy that I was able to do a small thing like that.  I dont know how my parents had the patience to deal with me like they did.  But, because of their patience, I learned to do the little things that all kids do.  I thank God that they were able to teach me these things.

My brother was an active child who caught on to do somethings faster than I did.  Mom used to say that what he couldnt think of to do, I could.  Even tho my parents didnt know anything about a child with a disability, they had the intuition to teach me what they would teach a normal child.
